OECD

Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development

The OECD has provided analysis on how Latin America and the Caribbean are combating COVID-19. They published an Economic Outlook webpage in March 2021 that focuses on COVID-19 vaccination programs. The OECD compiled a set of key policy recommendations focusing on the short-term affected sectors, as well as the long-term consequences of the pandemic and the route to recovery. Specifically, towards Latin America, the OECD recommends that in the immediate term governments need to prioritize preventing the spread of COVID-19, focusing on vulnerable households, workers, and firms. Policies during this time should include demand stimulus, support for the most affected sectors, and investments for post-COVID recovery. In the medium-term, the OECD recommends using this crisis as an opportunity to move towards stronger social protection and better public services. The organization emphasizes the importance of international cooperation during this crisis and international organizations’ key role in providing financial assistance to the countries in most need.

The OECD has a page on their website focusing on Latin America and its commitment to work with countries in the region on investment, education, inclusiveness, competition, good governance, anti-corruption, and fiscal policy. The organization works closely with countries in the region to compile data, analyze the situation, and make the necessary policy recommendations. The OECD works with the region by supporting reform agendas, creating sub-regional initiatives, and advancing key partnerships, country programs, and accession processes. During COVID-19, the OECD has focused their efforts in the area on analyzing the best way to deal with the crisis in the region. Latin American countries are featured on the OECD’s Tackling COVID-19 page. The OECD is focusing on the recovery from COVID-19, emphasizing a strong, resilient, green, and inclusive recovery. The COVID-19 page now includes declarations, key areas of focus, and key policy measures relating to the recovery. Most key highlights on the page focus on the COVID-19 vaccine and its equitable distribution.
